Scholarships for Sports Medicine Students
Sports medicine degrees are available at the associate's degree, bachelor's degree and master's degree level. The types of scholarships available to students of sports medicine will depend on the degree level that the students are seeking. There are, of course, endless general scholarship opportunities out there. A student who has a scholarship for an undergraduate institution can most likely use it for their sports medicine program and these are the most common types of scholarships that students get.
Usually, students find scholarships through college scholarship search engines, available on the web, or they are granted to them by the college they attend. In other cases, students get scholarships from the high school they attended or from private organizations with which they are affiliated. Medical students have a whole different group of scholarship opportunities available to them to help them fund their medical degree program. However, there are a number of scholarship opportunities that are specific to sports medicine.
Where to Find Sports Medicine Scholarships
A student who is majoring in sports medicine or a related discipline, such as general fitness or public health, can search for related scholarship opportunities through a variety of third party organizations. Particularly, professional organizations that provide certification opportunities to sports medicine professionals often offer scholarships to aspiring sports medicine practitioners.
The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine – an organization that is dedicated to the prevention of sports related foot, leg, ankle, and knee injuries and the education of professionals who treat these injuries – offers a scholarship fund that is open to members of a local organization.
Other sports medicine organizations referred to on this site also offer certain scholarship opportunities to select students, although in some cases these students must be members of the organization. For example, the National Athletic Trainer's Association offers a $2,300 scholarship to those who are at least juniors in college, though the award can also be applied to master’s degree and doctoral degree pursuits. Students also have to have a 3.2 GPA to be eligible for this scholarship award.
The American College of Sports Medicine offers a number of scholarships to undergraduate students. These depth and amount of these scholarships vary. Some of them are intended to be used for travel – such as the Steven M. Horvath Travel Award, which is a $500 scholarship to help fund the cost of travelling to local conferences. Other scholarships can be used to cover tuition and textbook costs.
